Empowering Medical Regulation with Advanced Data Solutions
FSMB’s data and information processing capabilities are foundational to its mission and vision, enhancing the organization’s ability to support state medical boards in their mission of public protection.
At the heart of FSMB’s technology infrastructure is the Information Services department. This team’s deep expertise with physician data enables FSMB to continuously improve its ability to help medical boards quickly access essential and reliable data, streamlining the workloads of board staff.
New Portal Streamlines Document Retrieval
The FSMB’s Physician Data Center (PDC), relied upon by state medical boards, credentialing organizations, and consumers, provides reliable, up-to-date licensure, disciplinary, and demographic data on more than one million physicians and physician assistants.
In 2023, FSMB completed the first phase of a new platform to augment the PDC user experience by improving search functionality, physician roster management, and adding technological advancements to support future development.
Launched in May 2024, the project’s second phase enables state medical boards to access and download all FSMB documents, including PDC and FCVS reports, USMLE Transcripts, and Uniform Application documents, from a single, convenient location.
Translating Data into Insights
In 2023, research staff conducted FSMB’s seventh Census of Licensed Physicians in the United States, published in the Journal of Medical Regulation. In conjunction with the Census, staff provided medical boards, policymakers, and researchers with an updated snapshot of the nation’s physician workforce, complete with graphics summarizing key licensure and disciplinary data drawn from the PDC.
Academic Medicine published ahead-of-print an article developed by FSMB research staff and colleagues looking at how remedial continuing medical education can reduce disciplinary recidivism among physicians.
The research team also assisted the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants’ (NCCPA) update state-by-state counts of licensed physician assistants for inclusion in the NCCPA’s 2023 Annual Report.
